Barbie’s new diverse line includes a doll with a hearing aid

Barbie continues her representational journey.

This year, a new line of Fashionista Barbies focuses on diversity and inclusion. The line includes a doll with a prosthetic leg, a Ken doll with vitiligo, and a range of dolls with a variety of body types. Moving away from the original Barbie body, the new dolls will come in different shapes and sizes. New Ken doll options also include dolls with rooted short hair and slender body types.

The updated line of dolls will be available in June 2022.

Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls at Mattel, said, “Barbie believes wholeheartedly in the power of representation, and as the most diverse line of dolls on the market, we are committed to continue to introduce dolls with a range of skin tones, body types and disabilities to reflect the diversity children see in the world around them.”

“It’s important that children see themselves reflected in the product and encourage play with dolls that don’t look like them to help them understand and celebrate the importance of inclusion.”

Astronaut Barbie is finally going – literally – to space

The line will also see the first Barbie with behind-the-ear hearing aids. The doll was developed with Dr. Jen Richardson, audiologist and hearing loss advocate.

Dr Richardson said she was “honoured to have worked with Barbie”.

“As an educational audiologist with over 18 years of experience advocating for hearing loss, it is inspiring to see those who suffer from hearing loss reflected in a doll. I am beyond thrilled that my young patients see and play with a doll that looks like them.”

The complete Barbie Fashionista 2022 line will hit shelves at Amazon, Target and Walmart for $9.99 in June 2022.
