Noting that especially with the Ministry of Health’s newborn hearing screening program, implant surgery is reduced to 1 year, Åahin states that these children show language development like their peers at the onset of hearing and early rehabilitation.
“The cochlear implant is necessary in case of severe hearing loss”
Stating that the hearing classification is made based on the results of certain hearing tests, ahin said, âWe are evaluating by applying all test batteries in our clinic. Based on these test results, we rank hearing loss up to 25 dB as normal, between 26 and 40 dB as mild, between 41 and 60 dB as moderate, between 61 and 80 dB as advanced, and above 81 dB + as very severe. Children with mild to moderate hearing loss can develop like their peers with the right hearing aid and hearing rehabilitation. However, although very few children with advanced hearing loss show improvement with a hearing aid and hearing rehabilitation, there are many issues such as poor language development, inability to understand spoken words, inability to express oneself, an inability to understand in noise, etc. .in their daily and school life. They experience serious difficulties in certain situations and lag behind their peers in all areas of development. For this reason, almost all children with severe to profound hearing loss need a cochlear implant. Treatment of cochlear implants is covered by SSI.
“Teachers of hearing impaired students have a lot of work to do”
Stating that teachers of hearing impaired children also have a lot of work to do, ahin said, âOur most important expectation from our teachers is that they accept our children and believe that these children can be successful when the right environments are provided. We need to motivate and encourage our deaf children and their families, guide other students on attitudes and support for our deaf children, cooperate with experts and advice, be ready to use the FM device and sit in the middle or in the front row where they can see the student more easily.
“Regular audiological follow-up is essential”
Åahin, listing things that should be done for the academic success of hearing-impaired students, said: âRegular audiological monitoring, long-term and effective use of hearing aids or cochlear implants, learning and application of methods effective communication skills, realizing that the language development of the hearing impaired child is not limited to educational sessions.
