RADIO and TV personality Marty Whelan has teamed up with Specsavers to encourage the nation to take care of their hearing and address any concerns or changes they notice.

In year two of the Specsavers Healthy Hearing campaign, Marty joined audiology experts to raise the volume on hearing health, encourage behavior change and raise awareness of the benefits of available PRSI hearing aids.

Following changes to the PRSI scheme last year, those eligible for the allowance can now benefit from a pair of hearing aids worth up to €1,000 or use their PRSI contribution to cover the cost of a pair of more expensive hearing aids from Specsavers. Even with a medical card, many will also have PRSI rights which would entitle them to a free pair of hearing aids.

Marking the change in benefits, popular opticians and audiologists have pledged to test and screen a quarter of a million people over a two-year period and so far they are halfway to the goal.

Marty says, “Working in radio and television, I realized the importance of hearing in my career and in my personal life. I love listening to music and talking to people, having that connection is really important to me. As I get older, hearing loss can naturally become more prevalent, so it’s important to stay current and incorporate a hearing test into my overall health checkup at least once a year.

“We need to normalize the conversation around hearing loss, intervention is key and it’s so important to seek expert advice and care.”

Hearing loss affects around one in 12 Irish adults and affects people of all ages. Your hearing changes over time and for different reasons, which is why people experience different types of loss at different stages of life. Despite this, many people often ignore the signs of hearing loss, fearing being judged by others..

Speaking of Specsavers’ mission to screen and test a quarter of a million people by the end of 2022, Marty adds: “This is the second year of Specsavers’ commitment, I think it’s a great way to encourage people to take a proactive approach to their healthy hearing and sign them up for a hearing test. also my friends and family.

A new study, commissioned by Specsavers, has found that more than a third of Irish adults regularly worry about losing their hearing. The perceived cost of hearing aids (26%) is the biggest barrier to potentially wearing a hearing aid in the future. However, this should no longer be a problem, thanks to the updated PRSI changes.

Getting a hearing aid is all about finding what’s right for you, understanding your hearing needs, lifestyle and budget. Specsavers offers a wide range of hearing aids, including its own Specsavers Advance range. Advanced hearing aids feature some of the latest technology, at Specsavers prices. Features may include background noise reduction, mobile audio streaming from a device such as a phone, wireless connectivity, app connectivity, and charging capability.

Speaking about the launch of Healthy Hearing Month in April, Specsavers Audiology President Martina McNulty said, “Based on our research, we found that almost half of adults (44%) believe that there is no there is not enough information available about hearing loss and what to do if you think your hearing is deteriorating.

“As a company, we’re on a mission to open the conversation about hearing health and hearing loss. With our promise to test a quarter of a million people, we want to encourage more people to think about their hearing in as part of their overall health. We have state-of-the-art testing facilities across the country and our colleagues are trained not only to perform hearing tests, but also to provide people with the information they need to taking care of their hearing health I encourage anyone who hasn’t had a hearing test in the past year to book today at their local Specsavers store.
