The EarGo 6 hearing aid, which features a “mask mode” to help the hearing impaired communicate with people wearing face masks, is displayed alongside a larger, more conventional device during ShowStoppers on the sidelines of Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on January 5, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sony has released new information on its latest ventures, now focusing on healthcare and technology with WS Audiology. The pair are reportedly focusing on creating and manufacturing a new over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid that will be available in most pharmacies and other stores, without the need for a prescription.

According to the statement, Sony is making a lot of efforts in hearing aids, and a device is already in development thanks to the efforts of the two companies. WS Audiology is a well-known hearing aid manufacturer that has already marketed its products worldwide, helping people with hearing loss pick up sounds in public or in conversations.

FDA wants OTC hearing aids

In August, the US Food and Drug Administration paved the way to give users greater access to hearing aids, making them available over-the-counter, without the need for a doctor’s prescription. This is an important victory for those who need a hearing aid without having to go to the doctor for a prescription, having it available at all times.

With this, Sony will be able to tap into a new market to help those in need, with product releases soon centered around its availability.

Sony and its Wearables

Sony is famous for its technological portable devices available to everyone, and most of these devices focus on a new audio experience that will focus on the many types of music and streaming needs of the public. An example would be its latest wireless Bluetooth in-ear headphones, the Sony WF-1000XM4 which is the latest in its line of headphones.

Another product catering to the Japanese tech maker’s audio listening needs is the Sony WH-1000XM5, the upcoming flagship wireless Bluetooth headphones featuring the on-ear setup. It also brings noise cancellation and a sleek new design that will make it less heavy every time users wear it on their head.

Sony’s PlayStation also offers portable devices, focusing on the company’s VR device, the PSVR 2.

Tapping into the health tech market is an important step for future releases from Sony, especially with a device that will focus on helping users hear and perceive sounds in the world. Over-the-counter hearing aids are now getting massive attention, especially as there are plans to make them more available to the public to help with their hearing and audio perception.
